A nail-biting, brutal competition to find the best (non-actor) actor in the bunch.

The contestants will gather votes from clients, friends, family, fans: their sponsors. Each contestant will have a sponsorship mentor: helping them, promoting them, rooting for them – generally, being in their corner.

The contestants will be partnered with a theatre mentor and together they will create and submit their audition tape. These ‘auditions’ will be used online to gather votes. Votes make money. Each contestant will gather enough votes to hit their team target…. Or exceed it, for bragging rights.

The contestants will be encouraged to create the buzz for their votes.

The contestants will show up at Casino Nova Scotia on April 7th to play a series of live rounds in front of a panel of tough judges and an audience of 3-400 people. Each round sees two more eliminated. The audience will get to see a showdown, with thrills, spills and so much drama.

What’s more, they get to vote and choose the winner.

SIX enter, but only one can be crowned the 'So, You Think You Can Act?' Thespian of 2017, taking home the coveted SYTYCA trophy.

The online fundraising component and voting system will be managed by EFT sponsor immediaC.

THE CONTESTANTS

We are so excited to announce our six Hali-famous contestants. These brave and wonderful souls have decided to tread the boards and make a dramatic play for the 'So, You Think You Can Act?' trophy 2017. We thank them for their generosity.

The public will vote for the celebrity they like the best BEFORE the event happens, giving TWO contestants IMMUNITY in the first knockout round on April 7th.

Voiting runs until 8pm on April 7th...

Here are our six contestants:

MEGAN LESLIE

After an exhilarating high school career as a stage manager for many high-profile productions featured in the Sears Drama Festival, in 1991 Megan Leslie made the leap from back stage to centre stage in the Insanity of Mary Girard, winning the Adjudicator’s Award for this ensemble piece. Her love of theatre eventually led her to the oldest and longest-running theatric spectacle in Canada: The House of Commons.

While engaged in the cut-and-thrust of politics as Halifax’s MP and NDP Deputy Leader, Megan made time for her artistic career, regularly auctioning off “karaoke and nachos with your MP” as a fundraiser for local activist organizations; narrowly losing to Tanya Davis in “Dancing with the Halifamous” for LiveArt Dance; singing “Bud the Spud” for the nation on the death of Stompin’ Tom Connors, and dazzling Jaimie Anderson Internship fundraiser attendees with her rendition of “Down to the River.” This is Megan’s  first much-anticipated return to acting since her performance in the House Mary Girard, and she looks forward to taking home the SYTYCA trophy.

JC DOUGLAS

JC is the twisted knob on your radio every morning on C100.  That is, he co-hosts with Peter and Melody!  He's been dabbling in local community theatre almost as long as he's been on the air in Halifax ... since 1988, he's been a regular with Dartmouth Players, and enjoyed stints with Theatre Arts Guild and the Gilbert & Sullivan Society Of Nova Scotia.  That being said, JC claims that he does NOT think he can act, and audiences across the city have resoundingly echoed that sentiment.  You be the judge.

FAT APOLLO

Fat Apollo, Michael McCluskey, is a mixture of all things geeky and nerdy rolled up in a crunchy comedic shell. Donning Everlast boxing gloves, as well as a cape and shirt made of vintage Battlestar Galactica bed sheets (circa 1977) – Fat Apollo is a true multi-media juggernaut.

Fat Apollo was the first to harness the raw sexuality of geek culture, and has, thrice, been voted “Sexiest Person in Halifax”, ending Ellen Page’s undefeated seven year run, as well as 2nd most Halifamous Celebrity and Best Local Character by readers of The Coast magazine for four straight years.  He is also the winner of the Halifamous Chocolate Bar competition at “Sugah!” leading to the creation of the Fat Apollo Candy Bar.

The showbiz bug bit early with a stint as a Buster Brown shoe model, and appearances on the Reach for the Top teen show. Fat Apollo really made his mark in Victoria BC, as the special guest morning-man replacement on Q100.3 launching the briefly popular, guess that tune game, The Kazoo Monster.

His feature film work features critical, but blink and you’ll miss them, background roles in, Look Who’s Talking, Here’s to Life, and Stephan King’s Needful Things. He was almost in the X- Files, but had to settle for travelling in a tiny float plane with David Duchovny on the day he proposed to Tea Leone. Tea rejected Fat Apollo for David.

Now residing in his hometown of Halifax, Fat Apollo is a charter member of the long running Geeks Versus Nerds comedy show. Voted funniest comedy night and best podcast in Halifax by The Coast's readers, it is recorded live and has been featured five times at Hal-Con. In 2010, Fat Apollo debated Nathan Fillion as to superiority of the Millenium Falcon over the Serenity, and in 2011 defeated Teddy & Ajay of Innerspace, successfully proving Yoda was the better headmaster than Dumbledore.

His one man show “Storytime with Fat Apollo” is a hit at Sci-Fi conventions across Canada, and lives on Twitter at realfatapollo
