The Archive of Missing Things was founded in order to collect, catalogue and store all missing objects that are in the world. The Archive was built around a secret.

The Archive of Missing Things is a contemplative game in a library. Equipped with an iPad and a headset, you have 90 minutes to explore a maze-like archive in search of the secret at its centre. You might run out of time, but you aren't alone: clues are hidden in a live performance happening secretly around you. Created by Zuppa with Trillium-Award-winning writer Kate Cayley, this performance, online book and game, travels through Utopia's debris field and a family story spanning three centuries.

Based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, we aim to make extraordinary experiences that provoke the consideration of new perspectives and ideas. We prioritize questions over answers, and the discovery of possibility over the depiction of what is. This compels us to experiment with new forms and grapple with relevant questions of our time. We attempt to do this as generously as possible and have developed a unique collaborative process that favours the intuitive over the formulaic and thrives on the play between the imagined and the real.

Ursula (she/her) is a local actor and law student. She is thrilled to be working on Archive again. Previous Zuppa credit: tiny. Some favourite previous theatre credits include Downed Hears (EFT/ Ships/ Matchstick), Essay (Matchstick), Schoolhouse (Two Planks), and the Rainbow Fish (Mermaid). Favourite film credits include To the Moon, Sugar Highs, Mickey, and Bone Cage. Ursula is eternally grateful for her beloved theatre community.

Alex McLean

Director / Chief Archivist

Alex McLean (he/him) is a theatre artist based in Kjibuktuk/Halifax. He is a co-artistic director of Halifax’s Zuppa Theatre Co. and has co-written and directed the majority of that company’s shows. Recent works with Zuppa are The Movements, The Archive of Missing Things, tiny (with Vertical City), Pop-Up Love Party and This is Nowhere, a large-scale live/digital performance for out-of-the-way places.

With his ad hoc group Surplus Production Unit, he directed and wrote (from verbatim sources) A Timed Speed-Read of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire Trial Transcript with Additional Notes. With Ker Wells he was a founding member of Number Eleven Theatre (1998 -2006), and he holds an M.A. from the University of Toronto’s Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies.

A specialist in devising, Alex has taught extensively, published scholarly articles, and collaborated with practitioners across multiple disciplines. His work explores the past, the present, and things that are too big to grasp or too small to contain.
